Don't Stop Believing

Daniel 1:1-4, 7, 17-20

To these four young men God gave knowledge and understanding of all kinds of literature and learning. And Daniel could understand visions and dreams of all kinds. (Daniel 1:17 NIV)

Life as Mishael knew it changed in an instant. King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon took over his beloved Jerusalem and the king picked Mishael and other young men to work in his palace. They had no choice in the matter. Surely God had not cast the men out. All they had to cling to was that God would bring something good from this horrific situation and that justice would prevail.

It was not a random choice who was to work for the king. He chose the young men based on the following criteria: the men had to be handsome, intelligent, and moldable. Perhaps in another situation some of these attributes would be a complement but not in this instance. To top off everything, their identities were taken from them. The men’s names were changed.

Mishael did not get to return home, but God did not abandon him either. Besides Mishael, Daniel, Shadrach, and Abednego stood out among the other young men. God gave the men grand abilities. Daniel received the ability to interpret dreams while God gave Mishael and the other two wisdom and book knowledge.

Lord, I don’t know what I am doing here and I do not see evidence of things changing. I do know that You said You would never abandon me. I am holding tightly to that promise. Take away these discouraging feelings. I pray all these things in the name of Jesus, Amen.

The Joy of a Job

Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Does he not leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? (Luke 15:4 NIV)

Counting to one hundred isn’t as easy as it sounds. How about counting one hundred sheep? That is part of the job as a sheepherder. A shepherd has to recheck for accuracy and consistency sake but then there comes a time when he may lose his place, or a sheep moves and its wide tail gets in the way and he ends up counting the same animal twice.

These animals are constantly in his view so if one is in trouble the shepherd can call out and aid in its rescue.

It’s an awful feeling when one of the sheep strays. If the sheepherder dwells on the fact and feels guilty, he will be no good to the others. Feeling badly won’t bring back the lost sheep. That lost one consumes the sheep leader until he finds it. When one is found and comes home to join the others, the sheepherder rushes to tell his friends the great news.

Standing Out in the Crowd

Upon picking up my daughter from morning preschool one day, her teacher said to me, “You are such a good mom. We need more mommas like you.” Me? Did she have the right mother or was the teacher thinking of a different Lisa? I was the most uncalm mom I know.

Would this educator change her tune if she knew I had erroneously sent my child to school with her shoes on the wrong feet, accidentally fed her luncheon meat a week past its consume by date, or forgotten the wipes in the diaper bag on a few occasions?

I wasn’t going to contradict the teacher’s kind statements; instead I thanked her. The conversation got me wondering what she saw that I didn’t see or know about myself. I offered to volunteer, donated school supplies, and vocalized my appreciation for her watching my toddler. Surely other moms did the same. I wasn’t one who made homemade chocolate snacks or crafts for the class parties. I was more the type who would search for something to make creatively from the dollar store. Maybe her comments were generated by the fact that I have the cutest and sweetest kid in the world, or at least that class. That must be it!

Lord, I am reminded that there is no condemnation in You. (Romans 8:1) Thank You for providing people to grace our paths to encourage and enlighten us. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.

Looking Out for Number One

Luke 16:1-13

“Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much.” (Luke 16:10 NIV)

You know how rumors start. A person hears something and passes what she heard to someone else. Then that person tells someone else what she thinks she remembers. The cycle continues until a conglomerate of the truth is revealed. A rumor started about a manager, stating that the man was being dishonest and of course one of the people who heard the rumor was the manager’s boss. This rumor turned out to be true. The boss fired him and asked for an audit of the manager’s books.

The manager did not have the energy to look for a physically demanding job, he was too proud to beg, and had no interest in mending his ways. Fortunately for him, the manager came up with a cunning plan.

For everyone who owed the boss money, their balance was reduced. These people were now in the manager’s debt. Surely, the manager reasoned, these men could find him a job or help with expenses until the manager got back on his feet. The ironic and sad part is that the boss was in awe of the man’s craftiness and how he looked out for himself.

May we learn not to be deceived like the men in this parable. Once we begin to lie or cheat, we are opening ourselves up to that behavior. If we are not careful, we could begin to see it as acceptable when deep down we know that it is not. Let us make sure that we don’t view money as the master of life.

Lord, Allow me to find a healthy balance between You and money. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

Better than Cash

Acts 3:1-20

By faith in the name of Jesus, this man whom you see and know was made strong. It is Jesus' name and the faith that comes through him that has given this complete healing to him, as you can all see. (Acts 3:16 NIV)

There had been nothing extraordinary about the day. A lame man was at the temple gate called The Beautiful Gate. Two men walked past him and the man automatically asked them for some money. The disabled gentleman didn’t wallow in his circumstances nor did he blame others for not being able to walk. He just needed some cash to help get by. When you are restricted in movement, you survive the best way you know how.

The men didn’t have any money but said they had something else. They had the power to change his life, something better than money. They told the lame man to walk in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth. Miraculous to this man, it worked. He could walk. He was healed. The Beautiful Gate lived up to its name for things were beautiful for this man now. He started to praise God, walking and jumping into the temple with the two men, named Peter and John.

People who saw the man inside the temple were amazed. He held tightly to Peter and John, since he was not used to using his legs yet. Peter used the lame man's healing as an opportunity to talk to the crowd about Jesus. Peter reminded them of Jesus’ life and death on Earth. It was due to Jesus that the once lame man stood before them now. Peter did not blame the people for sending Jesus to die, but told them how to repent and turn to God so He could also bring them refreshment.

Lord, I know You exist and have the power to change things. At times doubt shows up and I forget about Your awesome power. Show me how to run doubt out of my mind so that I can trust You completely. Thank You God. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

In the News: Weakness

If you scan the magazine covers in the checkout line, they are filled with scandal, secrets, and tragedy. What is the purpose? Why can't famous people be satisfied? It is sad when anyone, a politician, celebrity, relative, or neighbor falls prey to the flesh.

Samson, a judge in the Old Testament, came from loving parents. He was anointed by God and mighty in physical strength, he had a lot going for him. Still, Samson had a tragic life. He had a weakness for women. (See Samson's story in Judges 13-16.) His trust in one in particular, manipulative Delilah, cost Samson his life.

Samson was used by Delilah, then he was captured and maimed. With nothing to lose, Samson went to his heavenly father. Samson went to the one who could help. God did not turn him away, nor did the Lord use the opportunity to remind Samson of his mistakes or flaws. Samson put his faith in a forgiving and caring God, just as we can when it seems all is lost.

Lord, Help me recognize any weaknesses. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.

Peter’s Words to the Wise

1 Peter 5:5-7

Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. (1 Peter 5:6-7 NIV)

Peter tells us to be submissive to those who are older. Isn’t that a given? Guess it is a good reminder to respect your elders. Peter also advised us to be humble for with humility we will find God’s grace.

I admit, I don’t give humility much thought on a day-to-day basis. The disciple Peter wanted us not to fall into that trap of conceit or pride so God could continue to use us. If we stay humble, God helps us out of messes. We are to give all our anxieties over to Him.

Lord, I want to take Peter’s words to heart and give You all my worries and anxieties. I release them over to You, the one who truly cares for me. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

Can You Hear God Now?

Acts 27:7-12, 20-37, 28:1-10

After the men had gone a long time without food, Paul stood up before them and said: “Men, you should have taken my advice not to sail from Crete; then you would have spared yourselves this damage and loss.” (Acts 27:21 NIV)

The commander did not listen to Paul. Upon his journey to Rome, he and the others came across some high winds, which made it difficult to navigate. The commander ignored Paul’s advice and listened to those with a nautical background rather than Godly intervention. They sailed on and suffered the consequences. The crew had given up. They stopped eating, convinced they would die at sea. All this could have been avoided if the men listened to Paul. The apostle told them so. He wasn’t being arrogant; he wanted them to comprehend the magnitude of God’s power and when it’s in one’s best interest to obey Him. Paul also told the men to keep their courage for no one would die, but the ship would be destroyed. Paul took no credit for this news for it came to him only by Godly revelation.

God took care of them and they ended up on an island called Malta. The inhabitants were friendly and accommodating people. They made the men a fire to keep warm from the cold rain. Paul helped place sticks on the fire and in the mist of assisting found a poisonous snake gripping his hand. He shook the beast off and it landed into the fire.

If Paul focused on the snake and the harm it could bring, it would have made the situation worse. Paul also could have concentrated on being shipwrecked, lost, and in a strange place, instead of focusing on God’s provisions. He passed the test. He didn’t let that snake stop him or change his attitude and Paul was unharmed.

Publius, the chief official of Malta hospitably opened his home to the men for three days. Publius' father had a fever and suffered with dysentery so Paul prayed and laid hands on the man. He was healed. God’s power was with Paul and good came to Malta. After Publius’ father was healed, the island’s sick people came to Paul and they were cured. What a sight. The islanders gave the crew supplies for the voyage and they were on their way. Although Paul's time at Malta was temporary, God’s presence was magnified.

Lord, I listen to You and put aside my own philosophy. Let me not focus on problems but be grateful that You have established a means beyond the problems. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

Esther 3:1-10, 5:9-15, 6:6-13, 7:1-10

Esther said, “The adversary and enemy is this vile Haman.” Then Haman was terrified before the king and queen. (Esther 7:6 NIV)

Life was going great for Haman until his ego got in the way. King Xerxes appointed him prime minister. Due to the post, all the kings’ officials had to bow to him. All did except Mordecai, due to his Jewish faith. Haman was outraged Mordecai got away with not bowing. Haman made it his mission to not only destroy Mordecai but all the Jewish people. Haman talked to the king very delicately about this matter. He didn’t name names; just discussed with the king how there was a group who refused to obey his laws and that was reason enough for them to die. The naive king had faith in Haman and said his new prime minister should do what is best.

Haman discussed the situation with his wife Zeresh and friends. At their urging, he ordered gallows built to hang Mordecai. The next morning the king asked Haman’s opinion on how to honor a man. Naturally Haman presumed he was talking about himself. So Haman told the king to give the man a robe, horse, crown, and to lead the honoree in the streets. To Haman’s shock, his lavish idea was wasted on Mordecai.

Mordecai was the man the king planned to honor for past courageous work, not Haman. He was so humiliated. Haman went home and again consulted his wife and friends. They weren’t very comforting and told Haman there was no way he could oppose Mordecai now. Before Haman could stop his plan against the Jews he was sent to a banquet with the king and queen where his plan was exposed.

Haman begged Queen Esther for a second chance but it was all in vain. The king ordered Haman hanged, ironically on the gallows he had made for Mordecai.

Lord, Don’t let me be a step behind. Keep my enemies from all harm and give them a reason not to be my enemy any longer. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

Clueless

Mark 6:1-6

When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed. “Where did this man get these things?” they asked. “What's this wisdom that has been given him, that he even does miracles!” (Mark 6:2 NIV)

Jesus had returned to His hometown for a visit and brought His disciples along. It was amazing how many people were offended. They were not grateful for Jesus’ gifts of healing and restoration. They did not see who Jesus really was.

The people wanted their hurtful words to tear Jesus down so they could be lifted up. They were jealous not having the same insights as Jesus, someone with their same background. If they only knew.

The people didn’t see or know what was ahead of Jesus nor would they be ready to do what the Father had asked of His Son. It goes to show that a prophet isn’t given much respect among friends and relatives who knew Him when. Jesus could only heal a few sick people before leaving due to the community’s lack of faith.

Lord, Let me not be short sided and help my words to be edifying and not upsetting. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

A Memorable Incident

John 12:1-8

“You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me.” (John 12:8 NIV)

Mary’s brother Lazarus was sitting with Jesus while she anointed the Lord. The house was filled with the ointment’s fragrance. Mary was ridiculed by disciple Judas Iscariot, implying that she was wasting the perfume by pouring it on Jesus. Did Judas think it was a pious answer he was supposed to say about the poor or was he envious he didn’t think of the idea first?

Jesus wasn’t afraid to come to Mary’s rescue. He defended her actions. Jesus said we would always have the poor among us, but we would not always have Him.

He was so appreciative about the bottle of perfume. Well, okay it signified more than a perfume bottle. It showed someone caring about Him, putting the Lord first.

Lord, At times I am not sure what You need from me, just let me know if I am at least heading in the right direction. Thank You for coming to my rescue when I need defending. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

A Farmer’s Life

Matthew 13:1-9

As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. (Matthew 13:4)

Sowing seed was a normal part of being a farmer. The farmer mentioned in the Gospel parable wasn’t perfect. Not all the seed he sprinkled fell on the fertile soil. Some ended up as birdseed which is fine, it keeps the birds busy and out of the crops. Some of the seed fell on rocky soil and isn’t going to grow well without a supportive root system. Others fell in between thorns, which do not stand a chance.

Then there’s the seed that landed just where he wanted it to, in the good, fertile soil, which will guarantee a crop. You know what? This farmer harvested more than what he originally planted. Remarkable. This seed is similar to the Gospel message planted in people’s hearts. Both have different options for growth, some survive and some thrive. I want to be one that thrives.

Lord, This is my heartfelt prayer that I would believe in You and what the Bible says. Let me always remember when it looks unattainable, that’s Your cue. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

Be Careful What You Ask

Matthew 19:16-26

Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” (Matthew 19:21 NIV)

A rich man was given the opportunity to ask Jesus a question. He asked how to gain eternal life. Jesus said that a person needed to keep God’s commandments. That was easy. He did that already. Jesus advised the rich man to sell everything he owned and give the proceeds to the poor and then to follow Him.

When the wealthy man heard Jesus’ answer he sadly left for he couldn’t possibly give away all his possessions. The man was rich and didn’t know how to live without wealth. If ever he wanted or needed something he always got it. He was unsure if he could survive a bare bones existence. The man knew Jesus would be there, but how does one cope without the security of having money?

Lord, Give me the confidence I am lacking. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

Could you sell everything to follow Jesus?

I Believe! I Believe!

Acts 13:6-12

When the proconsul saw what had happened, he believed, for he was amazed at the teaching about the Lord. (Acts 13:12 NIV)

Bar-Jesus has always been a self-assured and confident man. Now look at him? Begging and grumbling for anyone to help him. Bar-Jesus tried to keep Sergius Paulus, the governor from learning about God. He wanted Sergius Paulus to be like him, trapped and succumbed into the sorcery world.

When Barnabas and Paul arrived in Paphos, Sergius Paulus invited them for a visit. He longed to hear their message from God. Bar-Jesus got in the way deliberately to put the cahoots on the meeting. Telling Sergius Paulus not to pay any attention to Paul and Barnabas’ words.

Then something happened to Paul. He glared angrily at Bar-Jesus. Calling him a sorcerer, son of the devil, a trickster, and evil villain. Paul brought God’s punishment onto Bar-Jesus, temporary blindness. It happened so quickly Bar-Jesus had no come back, defense, or plea for forgiveness. Not only did governor Sergius Paulus hear a message from God, he witnessed His power in action. That’ll teach Bar-Jesus to mess with God.

Lord, I believe in You. I praise Your holy and mighty name! In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

Once sight returned to Bar-Jesus do you think he turned to worshiping Jesus or did he return to his evil ways?

Where Is He?

1 Samuel 10:8, 13:8-15

“You acted foolishly,” Samuel said. “You have not kept the command the LORD your God gave you; if you had, he would have established your kingdom over Israel for all time.” (1 Samuel 13:13 NIV)

Seven days. Samuel said he’d meet King Saul in Gilgal in seven days. Where is he? King Saul had an enormous and vicious army ready to fight and the men were showing signs of hesitation and fear. Some left their posts they were so afraid. Those that stayed quivered in fear. Saul felt Samuel deserted him and he had to do something or he wouldn’t have an army left to fight the Philistines. Saul decided he would be the one to make offerings to God instead of Samuel, which was the original plan. What choice did he have? Samuel was late, Saul reasoned. It was a desperate situation, which called for drastic matters. Wouldn’t you know it, as soon as Saul finished the offerings Samuel showed up.

Samuel didn’t waste any time telling the king how foolish he was for making the offerings, as it was a total disregard to his instructions. Saul’s intent was to receive the Lord’s favor, but his actions proved the opposite. It cost King Saul his kingdom.

Lord, Help me make the right conclusions, no matter how inconsequential they may seem. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

When To Do the Right Thing

Mark 12:41-44

And he called his disciples to him, and said to them, “Truly, I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the treasury.” (Mark 12:43 NIV)

Could you have been as trusting as the poor widow? Imagine we could read her mind or a journal entry, what would it say?

Plunk. Plunk. Do you think anyone noticed? I didn’t want the coins to sound loud as I put them into the treasury. Sure, I could have done something else with the money. I knew it was correct to give the money to God. I didn’t want to be selfish. I could trust Him to provide for my needs, somehow. I felt good about my decision, knowing I didn’t put my own needs and desires ahead of others. Two pennies may not amount to much; it’s all I have. The men before me put large amounts into the treasury. I can’t compete with them. I was relieved the rich fellows went before me. I would feel somewhat ashamed dropping down my two coins in front of them. I quickly erase that thought from my mind as God knows my circumstances and doesn’t judge me by the amount but my heart.

Lord, I need Your advice in terms of finances. I want to do my part for Your kingdom, but I also need Your favor in dealing with the bills and payments in front of me. Show me where and how to contribute so You will see my faithfulness. If there is anything I am holding onto that You want me to give away, reveal that also. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

The Price of Popularity

Proverbs 13:14-20, 24:5

He who walks with the wise grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm. (Proverbs 13:20 KJV)

Solomon, the writer of Proverbs 13 offers us advice when it comes to choosing one’s friends. I plan to keep it close by once my daughter shows an interest in making friends. Right now she is more concerned with her young classmates' shoes than the classmates themselves.

Solomon goes on to describe that there are two types of candidates for acquaintances: wise and foolish people. When you meet a new person is there a checklist that goes off in your brain? For instance, is the person someone you would want to spend time with or does the phrase, find the nearest exit come to mind? Having a wise and sensible friend is the key to having a successful friendship.

One of the aspects of being a friend is also being trustworthy and a good listener. A person who isn’t reliable or understanding shouldn’t be a person with much influence over your life. You want a friend to be a helper and a confidant and in turn you want to be a helpful and encouraging friend. Good friends are people who have a positive influence on each other.

Lord, Show me how to be a good friend, someone wise and dependable. Please give me wisdom to have the right type of friends; ones that will help me stay on the path You have for my life. Are there areas where I need to be wiser? Less foolish? Thank You God for pointing out the places where I need to grow. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

Words of Wisdom from the Express Lane

"Motherhood is hard”, a stranger said to me, although she would not be a stranger for long as she would soon be scanning my personal items I was purchasing. The customer in front of me was telling the clerk how her grandson did not talk, even though there was nothing physically wrong with him. The boy did some sign language and grunted, but that was the extent of his communication skills. The clerk tried to look on the bright side and said all kids develop at their own rate and wished the lady a nice morning. The woman took her receipt, and went about her day.

I wanted to comfort that woman ahead of me in line. How could I tell this woman God is there to help when the relief does not come immediately? What role model can I be? I am like any other person waiting for something miraculous to happen, something to dull the pain, and lighten the load. All I could offer was the pep talk found in the Old Testament book Isaiah. The prophet asks: “Have you never heard? Have you never understood? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of all the earth. He never grows weak or weary. No one can measure the depths of his understanding. He gives power to the weak and strength to the powerless.” (verses 28-29 NLT)

Lord, I was suffering and felt there was no hope. Then You worked on my behalf and hope, freedom, and understanding returned to my life. Please do not let others lose faith that You can change things for their good. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

Today's Toddler Journal: There Is Always a Time

My daughter loves simple things. I relish the times while she is content with a game of follow the leader (with me trailing behind her), or flipping through coloring books. She then quickly moves on to lying on the floor, waiting for me to stroke her hair and cover her with a blanket. King Solomon, the writer of the Old Testament book Ecclesiastes reminds us to enjoy these moments as we never know how long they may last or what may be around the next bend.

It is hard to fathom that eventually my young child will be able to brush her own teeth, dress herself, turn out the light, and pour her cereal. Now these are my responsibilities. Mothers and authors of parenting articles tell me, as she grows up, I will wish for that type of connection with her. And so I do my best not to dread the extra demands, but instead be grateful I will be the one to teach her these life essential skills.

Solomon lists 28 events which humans cannot escape. In her two years on Earth, my daughter has already experienced them and helped me to become familiar with them. I wonder how many you can relate to.

A time to be born: She couldn’t wait to meet us and came into this world six weeks early.
A time to die: swatting mosquitoes who always aim for my daughter’s cheeks
A time to plant: instilling good table manners
A time to reap: the ability to go to a restaurant without embarrassment
A time to kill: selfishness
A time to heal: skinned knees
A time to destroy: breakfast flung across the kitchen
A time to build: stacks of blocks
A time to cry: leaving her with a babysitter for the first time
A time to laugh: my daughter’s dance moves
A time to be sad: when my daughter waves at some children and they don't wave back
A time to dance: playing “Ring Around the Rosie”
A time to throw away and a time to collect: consignment sales
A time to hug: at bedtime
A time not to hug: during time out
A time to search: for the missing remote control, hairbrush, keys, and matching socks
A time to count your losses: stop grieving because you can't sleep late
A time to hold on to: baby locks of hair and first outfits
A time to let go: enrolling daughter in morning preschool
A time to tear apart: Her fascination with ripping paper towels up into tiny pieces and then watching them float onto the floor, never having an inclination to clean them up
A time to mend: broken toys
A time to be silent: when my daughter attempted to walk for the first time
A time to speak: before she eats food off the floor
A time to love: the first time she spoke “momma”
A time to hate: the terrible twos and realizing the season is not a myth
A time to wage war: The changing table is my battleground.
A time to make peace: with food selections

Each of these “times” highlights our lives as mother and toddler. There are memories I cringe at, others I wish would return. Solomon does not mention our Creator in these verses, He is there behind the scenes. God never waivers in being our supporter, nurturer, and guardian. The Lord has been my companion, eyes, and listening ears through each one of these experiences and trials thus far, and will continue to be there as both parent and child grow.

Lord, Let me embrace all life has to offer. Bring healing to our land and let it be a time of peace and prosperity. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

Today's Toddler Journal: My Godly Caped Crusader

An incident happened recently at my daughter’s preschool that made me jumpy and vulnerable at every unfamiliar sound I heard or person I saw. I was buckling my daughter into her car seat when a car pulled into the spot next to me. I had never seen that vehicle before, and no one got out to retrieve a child, which I thought was strange. Just two people sitting there, with a window open listening to music. I looked over, made eye contact with the male driver, and quickly looked away. Something did not feel right, but I returned to a fussy child and then headed for home. I did not think any more about it, until I received an email from the preschool director telling all parents a police report was filed after that man struck up a conversation with one of my daughter’s classmates, suspected of trying to lure the child into his car.

I felt bad I did not do anything and blamed myself that I did not act on my suspicion. I emailed the preschool director to inform her that I was there when the car pulled into the parking lot and tried to have peace about the situation. My husband tried to comfort me the best he could, I appreciated that. He didn’t blame me and reassured me I did the right thing. I was grateful that no child was harmed and that the school was taking a proactive approach to keep the children safe. I was hopeful that the police would find this person so other children would not be in jeopardy.

I still felt frazzled so I went to the Man who created me and who knew what helped me remain calm. God did not leave me stranded. “Help me, Lord,” I asked, hoping for something to take away this consuming feeling of dread and terror. The Lord did not disappoint and reminded me that I have the tools to combat fear. “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” (Deuteronomy 31:6) The Lord could not have been any clearer that we are not to be afraid of what may happen. Knowing this loosened the knot in my tummy.

The school incident was a wake up call. I have to be strong and courageous in whatever I face, for God is always there, although not visibly. I constantly remind myself that God is the opposite of fear. Since I am created in His image, I do not have to be best buddies with fear anymore. I can give myself and my family the gift of being faithful instead of fearful.

Lord, Thank You for the Bible. It provides promises and truths to help quench our fears. Please guide and protect me in all my ways. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

Today's Toddler Journal: A Citrus Paradise

Your hands made me and formed me; Psalm 119:73 (NIV)

My daughter tried grapefruit today. That news does not sound very noteworthy, but what if I told you the rest of the story. She gravitated toward the peel and not the fruit. As my toddler put the piece of peel in her mouth, I rescued it and told her we don’t eat the peel just the fruit inside. My request to not put certain items into her mouth was not a new concept for her. She has made previous attempts to eat acorns, dirt, rocks, and dandelion petals.

The part which was safe, acceptable, and tasty to consume she did not want. Was the fruit peel more attractive? A neater texture? No doubt it was less slimy and squishy.

I loved that my daughter admired the tropical color, texture, and sweet scent of the fruit. She was admiring one of God’s creations and it dawned on me that she was also God’s handiwork. I took a closer look at her face, not just for a milk mustache or food crumbs, but for how God formed her. He has a reason for her extra, long eyelashes and her phenomenal kicking ability. She, like all children and adults, was created in His image. She is the Lord’s daughter, a person alive for a specific purpose. A young girl filled with ideas and words yet to be expressed.

Everything about you and me is important to God. God cares so much for us that He knows the number of hairs on our head, knows our every thought, and knows every aspect of our lives from the shape of our toes to what we will eat for breakfast. (See Psalm 139:13-18 and Matthew 10:29-30) Do you ever think, “I’m bored; let me count every single strand of hair.”? It’s an impossible and tedious task in human terms. Not for God. God, the creator of the universe knows the number of hairs on our head and what our every day on Earth will be like. These facts show us how the Lord knows those details exclusively and cares about us intimately.

So the next time your child refuses a slice of fruit and just wants to play tic-tac-toe with the seeds, or smash the nutritious snack making a messy masterpiece on your floor, smile and take heart. Use it as an opportunity to see God’s image in him or her.

Today's Toddler Journal: Eggs, Bean Bags, and Humble Pie

Our church was having a carnival and Mommy took me to an egg hunt in the field in front of the church. I found a few plastic eggs, but I was more interested in running than searching.

Most couples plan something special for just the two of them to celebrate their wedding anniversary. For ours this year, we attended an egg hunt. It was much different than a candlelight dinner or weekend away. Our church was holding an extravaganza complete with egg hunt, games, and a hot dog lunch. I was asked to help at the registration table, which had me a little nervous. I would not classify myself an extrovert; in fact approaching people isn’t something I jump at the chance to do.

During my shift, I accidentally messed up the raffle tickets for the door prizes. When people arrived, I was to hand out free raffle tickets for the door prizes. One of the sets of tickets was to be given to the attendees and the other placed in a box for the drawing. I inadvertently gave away both portions of the ticket.

Oops. I felt awful. The other volunteer took care of my mistake the best she could. I still felt inept and apologized for my error. I even got some disappointed looks from church members who knew my faux pas. My optimistic husband said if people were mad, they would soon get over it and to not let the experience ruin our day.

I was thankful he wanted to console me and not just point out my errors. By his stressing that the mistake wasn’t a big deal in the whole scheme of things, I felt better.

When both our shifts were over, the three of us went to play the other games. I could have let my self-absorbed thinking ruin everyone else's time if I focused or worried about my previous actions. Instead I got caught up in seeing our daughter participate in the ring toss and bean bag games, and seeing her go from timid to interested in the inflatable bounce house. I was grateful for our family time spent together and the fun experiences we had. When we make the conscious effort to remain calm and focus on the blessings instead of the inconveniences, our demeanor changes. I doubt my husband would feel like celebrating our life together if I was negative and gloomy. He would rather spend the day with a loving wife than with a spouse with a sour face.

Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. (Philippians 4:8 NLT)

Today's Toddler Journal: Hello, Beautiful

Stunning, lovely, picturesque, wonderful, and magnificent are all synonyms for the word beautiful. The Bible uses the word to describe an array of things. The trees in the Garden of Eden, lilies of the field, the land of Egypt and Jerusalem, and Old Testament wives Sarah and Rachel were considered attractive as are the feet of those who tell about the good news of God. If my daughter was born in Biblical times, I am sure she also would have been considered beautiful.

I wake up ready to start my day. I can't wait to play, eat cereal, and then play some more. Mommy greets me the same way as always, "Hello Beautiful," she says. Mommy tries to give me a hug but I am more interested in leaving the crib and getting the morning started. "Did my beautiful girl sleep well?" she asks me. There is that word beautiful again. Could she mean me?

Yes, for Ecclesiastes 3:11 states that "God has made everything beautiful in its time." It still amazes me to see how my daughter is growing and what she is learning. Sometimes I catch myself staring at my youngster with delight.

Lord, May we never lose track of the beauty surrounding us. Give us the courage to tell others the difference You have made in our lives. May I also continue to encourage my children. Allow them to always feel loved and never doubt how beautiful they are inside and out. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.

Today's Toddler Journal: Super Why! Can’t Be Wrong

I love Super Why! I will say his name over and over hoping my mommy gets the hint to put him on the big, black screen. And when she does, I am so excited. I clap and say his name some more.

Each episode of Super Why!, an education program geared for kids on public television, has the line "When we have a question, we look...in a book!" Super Why! can’t be wrong, can he?

I don’t live in "Storybrook Village" or have special spelling powers but I adhere to the same premise of looking in a book for the answers. My book of choice is the Bible.

I look to see what God says about a specific topic. While I haven't found hints to get my child to try different foods or to learn what the word gentle means, the Bible helps me gain God's invaluable perspective on how I should handle things and what my attitude should be.

As mothers, we play a major role in deciding what is best for our child. We could follow the norm but the same choice may not serve every mother. It is best to listen and act according to our conscience and our belief system. We may choose to be demanding and insulting or we can decide to behave with humility, sympathy, and compassion. (see 1 Peter 3:8-9)

We will find ourselves in unchartered territory, having to make the right decisions for our child’s welfare. When we are confronted with such situations, may we breathe calmly and think rationally. We can take stock in the fact that we have God's answer book at our disposal.

Lord, When I do not have the answers or the assurance of what the best choice for my child should be, grant me wisdom. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

Today's Toddler Journal: 220 and Counting

As of yesterday, I know over 220 words. My parents are keeping a tally and have been adding to it daily. My vast vocabulary is a milestone, a wonderful accomplishment. An expert in the field of speech says I am "exploding" and "doing great."

It may seem a little drastic to keep track of your child's every new word, but God also treasures the accomplishments of each of us, His children.

God is familiar with all our ways. He knows our thoughts, words, when we sit and stand, and every place we go. (Psalm 139:1-5)

God is our teacher, ready to instruct. (Psalm 32:8)

God is our personal counselor. He offers us advice. (Psalm 73:24)

God will give us wisdom when we ask. (James 1:5)

Lord, May I borrow parenting skills from You. Let my words and thoughts be honorable to You. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.

Today's Toddler Journal: Open Wide

Mom says I'm teething. She hopes once all my choppers come in I will want to try new foods and eat more. My eating habits have been a source of concern for Mom. I do admit to turning down a lot of the options she offers. I've even been known to throw a piece of banana or a hot dog. There are more foods I say no to than yes. For instance, I always say no to ice cream, pancakes, and macaroni and cheese.

Mom always asks what color plate or bowl I want my food on and takes great pains to arrange the food a certain way, thinking that will make meal time more appealing. Nope.

The Bible says we are to cast all our anxiety on the Lord because He cares for us. (1 Peter 5:7) Peter doesn't tell us to hand over our concerns, but throw them to God. Throwing takes more effort than giving something away. It shows determination and action.

I know my mom has prayed regarding my lack of interest in food. So what is she to do until my taste buds change? Wait for God to act.

The answer is not an easy one for Mom, someone who is not patient by nature. So Mom says a new prayer. She asks the Lord to help her rest in the fact that He is in control and to ease the anxieties at breakfast, lunch, dinner, and especially snack time!

Lord, May I learn to not base my beliefs on only what my eyes see. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.

Today's Toddler Journal: Gardening Lessons

Then he told this parable: “A man had a fig tree, planted in his vineyard, and he went to look for fruit on it, but did not find any.” (Luke 13:6)

I love being outside. I enjoy being in a sandbox, on a slide or in a swing. I am content to sit and touch rocks, sticks, flowers, acorns, dandelions, and the bumpy part of trees. Mostly I just like running in the grass.

I also like investigating our tiny garden of apple plants. Mom keeps telling me they aren't apples but tomatoes. Unfortunately, we have only had a few tomatoes. The rest have fallen prey to birds or squirrels. This doesn't discourage Daddy for long. He is always researching ways to protect the vegetables.

It reminds me of the Bible story Mommy remembered from Luke 13:6-9 about a man who had a tree in his yard, but it never produced any fruit. It was the same each time, none.

He was always hopeful that today would be the day he would enjoy plump figs from the tree, then disappointment swept in when no fruit was found, just round leaves. This procedure continued every day for three years. Finally the man had enough and ordered the tree cut down. The tree was pretty and signified hope of bounty but that hope reached its limit. Besides it was wasting space in the vineyard.

The gardener had another idea. He wasn’t as exasperated with the tree as the owner was and suggested giving it another year. The gardener would give the tree extra care and attention. If the tree was still barren after a year then it would be cut down. The man relented and gave the gardener a year to treat the tree.

Deep down I don't think the man wanted to remove the tree. He still believed in the tree.

Lord, Thank You for believing in us and helping us to not throw in the towel when times get tough and impatience sets in. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.

Today's Toddler Journal: Insomnia

"Mommy. Mommy." I know she can hear me. Why isn't she here? A few minutes ago I did the same thing and she came running into my room. Mommy got me out the crib, checked my diaper, and gave me some milk. We colored, played with blocks, and she wished me a sweet sleep before turning on my music box and then left the room. I don't want to take a nap. I am not tired.

I desperately wanted to rush in and answer my daughter's distress calls. I didn't. I knew she was overtired and needed to wind down. Within 15 minutes her cries subsided and she was asleep.

Sometimes we cry out to our loving parent and say, "God, God" and get no answer. We feel disappointed and wonder why He is ignoring us. Have we any unconfessed sin that needs repenting? Or is our prayer a time of trust and patience? Or is it that God knows best and sometimes an initial inaudible answer is God's way of responding.

Here are Scriptures that may help us when we are waiting for an answer from God.

Psalm 27:14 Wait for the LORD; be strong and take heart and wait for the LORD.

Psalm 130:5-6 I wait for the LORD, my whole being waits, and in his word I put my hope. I wait for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning, more than watchmen wait for the morning.

Today's Toddler Journal: Where's Lamby?

Lamby is my daughter's favorite toy these days. This is the first stuffed animal she has taken an interest in. She isn't fond of the baa baa sounds the sheep makes when you hit its tummy just so. She likes the animal's softness and its size. She can't sleep without him. If he is not in the crib, she will repeat Lamby, Lamby, until the animal returns to his rightful place beside her. My child's desire to be close to her lamb got me to wondering how often I turn to my own Lamb?

Jesus is referred to as our Lamb of God. He is "a lamb without blemish or defect." And the one "who takes away the sin of the world!" (See John 1:29 and 1 Peter 1:19)

Perhaps my daughter is drawn to Lamby's Godly characteristics: a good listener, patient, and always available.

Thank You, Lord for being there for us. May we always look for You and find our comfort in Your care. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.

Today's Toddler Journal: Ouch! That Hurt

It seems I am constantly tripping over my feet or walking into a wall. It stands to reason since I am fairly new at this walking and running thing. I don't have time or think to look where I am going.

I don't remember the first time I bumped my head. My mom does. She felt awful about it. One minute I was on my quilt practicing crawling and then there was a thud. Mom quickly picked me up and checked for bumps, scrapes, or bruises. She was thankful there were no serious signs of injury. I cried a little and Mom comforted me. Once I stopped crying I went back to practicing my crawling moves and then to licking my toes.

Even though my mom is there, I still fall down. She is there to check me out, and then help me get right back up to try again. God is like that, except He is always around, when our parents can't be.

"The LORD makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him; though he may stumble, he will not fall, for the LORD upholds him with his hand." Psalm 37:23-24 NIV

Thank You, God that You can keep us from stumbling. (Jude 1:24)

Today's Toddler Journal: What's Good about Waiting?

I love to paint. Mostly, I just love putting my fingers in the colorful goo. When I've had enough creativity for an afternoon and I am ready to do something else, I have to wait until Mom washes my hands and inspects my arms, elbows, and hair for any leftover paint. I hate that part. It seems to takes so long with the soap, water, and then drying with a towel. Why so many steps? When I start to fidget during the cleanup phase of an activity, Mom tells me it is okay and to be patient. Easy for her to say.

The Bible promotes parents to offer their children advice and encouragement. Even at a young age, Solomon was struck by his father's advice. He saw the importance of his father, King David’s words and wanted to pass that along to his own sons.

"My children, listen to your father's teaching; pay attention so you will understand." (Proverbs 4:1 NCV) Solomon goes on to tell his children the importance of wisdom and understanding, and to be careful in their thoughts and actions.

"My child, listen and accept what I say. Then you will have a long life. I am guiding you in the way of wisdom, and I am leading you on the right path. Nothing will hold you back; you will not be overwhelmed. Always remember what you have been taught, and don't let go of it." (verses 10-13)

What is it we hope our children remember? What words will they cherish?

Lord, May I make a conscience effort to use my words carefully. May I be a good example for my children. May they never lose sight of the value found in Godly wisdom and understanding. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
